Acne is one of the most common skin problems and is often caused by inflammation of the pilosebaceous follicles involving bacterial activity, especially Propionibacterium acnes. The use of natural ingredients as an alternative skin treatment continues to be developed, one of which is red ginger (Zingiber officinale), which is known to contain active compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory
properties. This study aims to formulate red ginger extract into a peel-off gel mask preparation and evaluate the physical characteristics of the resulting preparation. The study was conducted experimentally using the maceration method with 96% ethanol as the solvent to obtain red ginger extract. The peel-off gel mask preparation was formulated using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a film former and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) as a gel former. The evaluation of the preparation included organoleptic testing, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, drying time, and viscosity. The results showed that the red ginger extract peel-off gel mask had a clear yellowish color, a distinctive odor, and a homogeneous gel form. The pH value of the preparation was within the range suitable for skin pH, the
spreadability met the requirements for semi-solid preparations, the drying time was within an acceptable range, and the viscosity showed good consistency. Based on these results, it can be concluded that red ginger extract has been successfully formulated into a peel-off gel mask preparation with physical characteristics that meet the requirements and has the potential to be used as an alternative treatment for acne-prone skin.
